I’ll soon get back to the series of posts highlighting some of Judge Verkamp’s past decisions, but someone direct messaged me recently asking for information about my past jury trials.  That will take more than one post to cover, but here’s a start.

When I participated in my first jury trial, I wasn’t a lawyer yet – just a certified legal intern (CLI) finishing up law school.  But the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office trusted me enough to allow me to assist with a Class A felony case.  I questioned several witnesses and gave the opening statement, setting the tone for the rest of the trial.

The defendant was a man named Vincent Smith.  Mr. Smith had abducted and sexually assaulted a woman who was getting ready to head to the Indianapolis airport with her children to catch a flight.

Mr. Smith wanted to be referred to as “Guardian of Sacred Forces Yohan Bic Flame.”  I am pleased to report that the only sacred forces that Mr. Smith is currently guarding are those behind bars.  The judge in the Marion County case gave him 99 years in prison:  https://fox59.com/news/man-sentenced-to-99-years-in-abduction-rape-of-woman-who-was-headed-to-airport/

I was working hard to keep the community safe before I was even an attorney.  If I am elected judge, I will bring that same commitment to public safety to Dubois Circuit Court – I will hold violent criminals accountable for their actions, within the confines of the law.
